Mark plays saxes, oboe, pIano, organ as well as sings. On coming to do Physics at Oxford University, Mark set about increasing his experience of jazz and played lead sax in the University Big Band, 'The Donut Kings', which was managed and directed by Hannah. During his 4 years with them, he dramatically improved his improvisation, soloed numerously on their 2 CDs, discovered that Jazz is indeed Love, and generally had an amazing time. Past and present, Mark has played with Far Centre - an 'alternative jazz' ensemble, the St Ebbe's Jazz Group, Plural Sax (a distinguished sax octet where he met Clare), in numerous musicals, Oxford University Big Band, Magdalen Swing Band, and the rebellious jazz quintet 'Jazz in your Face'. Over the years Mark's tenor playing has been heavily influenced by his sax tutor, Sue Ferris, as well as the likes of Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, and Hank Mobley. His current 'weapon of choice' is a Yanigasawa T992 Tenor Sax with an Otto Link 'Super Tone Master' 7* mouthpiece. |
